The Y is proactively preventing disease in our communities by providing every man, woman and child in every Central Florida community with access to the programs they need to stay healthy and connected right in their own neighborhood. One of our programs focuses on diabetes prevention.
About one in three American adults—that’s 84.1 million people—have pre-diabetes. We are giving you the tools you need to reduce your diabetes risk and gain tools for healthy living through the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. Build a healthy lifestyle today by learning about healthy eating, physical activity and other behavior changes.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is based on research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which showed that by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a small amount of weight, a person with pre-diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by 58%.
In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach will help you change your lifestyle by learning about healthy eating, physical activity and other behavior changes over the course of 25 one hour sessions. Topics covered include healthy eating, getting started with physical activity, overcoming stress, staying motivated, and more. After the initial 16 core sessions, you will meet bi-weekly for 3 sessions and then monthly for added support to help maintain your progress.
ARE YOU AT RISK?
- I am fairly inactive. I am NOT physically active more than two times a week.
- I have or had a parent or sibling with diabetes.
- I have had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or have given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds.
- I am 45 years of age or older.
